Planejamento e dinheiro – o poço custou à companhia quase US$ 100 milhões.

A solução?

In search of (still) hidden oil
Semi-submersible platform SS-37 operating in the Voador field, in the Campos Basin
In a country that exploits only 5% of its subsoil, defining the oil-bearing systems still is the greatest challenge in most of the sedimentary basins. In the Campos, Santos and Espírito Santo Basins, where the geological model is already under control, Petrobras is betting on leading-edge technologies and accumulated know-how for exploiting the pre-salt.
The existence of a highly productive deposit in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, discovered through exploration work on BM-S-11, should ensure more than the announcement of a new field: the conclusion of the tests on well 1-RJS-628A represent the confirmation of a new exploration frontier in Brazilian deep waters.

The reserve containing light crude, with a 30º API, located below a two-meter thick salt layer – out of a total burial depth of six thousand meters – was even commemorated at the last conference with market analysts organized by BG – who hold 25% of the block. The test carried out on the vertical well revealed an outflow of 4.900 barrels of oil and 150 thousands m³ of natural gas per day, through a 5/8” opening, with stabilized pressure behavior– outflows considered excellent for any geological scenario.

“We managed to drill two thousand meters of salt in record time. Drilling took three months, with another month of tests precisely because we did a lot of planning”, revealed the executive manager for exploration at Petrobras, Paulo Manuel Mendonça.

Planning and money – the well cost the company almost US$ 100 million. Even special coverings were prepared – preventing possible surprises with the salt layer. “But the drilling fluids were adequate enough to avoid dissolving the salt, as well as the risks inherent in drilling the well”, the executive explained.

Finding oil in Brazil is not a trivial task – the complex geological structures, salt layers and igneous intrusions found in the Brazilian basins make it difficult to define the oil-bearing systems. “From the point of view of details, each basin can present specific problems – from adequately delineating the deposit, to portraying the generating potential of some rocks”, explains the geologist Giuseppe Bacoccoli.

Petrobras did it – generations of company geologists and geophysicists spent five decades searching for answers to the challenges that arose. “Walter Link (a geologist hired in 1954 to set up the Exploration department) prepared Petrobras to be a company with a technological bias. And what got off on the right foot, continues on the right path”, says Paulo Mendonça.

The executive cites as an example the discovery, in 1969, of the Guaricema field – the country’s first offshore field, located in the shallow waters of the Sergipe Basin – the fruit of investments in training and preparing geologists and geophysicists, seismic data and marine probes, which gave Petrobras new hope for redirecting its exploration towards the sea – because for forty years the entire production had been restricted to onshore basins. “If it hadn’t been for people with courage and technological knowledge, we would never have embarked on this stage”.

This was also the case in the Campos Basin, where after the early discoveries, the challenge was to leave aside the structural traps – clearly visible in the seismic readings – and tackle the stratigraphic traps, which were not as obvious. The solution? To develop technology for producing better images of these deposits. “Today, we are one of the world’s leading companies in developing seismic attributes, with working groups on seismic inversion and seismic attributes”.

Still on the subject of the Campos Basin, the same methodology for delineating the geological models, which responded positively in shallow waters, brought excellent results in deep waters in siliciclastic deposits – while the giant fields of Marlim, Albacora and Roncador were being discovered. But in the ultra-deep waters of the Basin, the models successfully used so far did not provide the desired results. The solution would be to look for oil in new basins, using new ideas – a dilemma for the oil workers who had spent three decades reaping good results in that region.

In the face of these new challenges, Petrobras decided to change its exploration strategy. The company’s Exploration department was restructured in 2002, bringing together at head office the geologists and geophysicists who until then had been scattered across various Petrobras Business Units. “We began with an intelligent proposal: to explore the north of the Campos Basin, abandoning the pre-established geological models, but still within the domain of our knowledge. There we found the Parque das Baleias (Whale Park) – where the Jubarte field is located, with reserves of 700 million barrels. To the extreme south of the Basin – where the volcanic activity at Cabo Frio negatively affected the quality of the seismic imaging – the improvement in seismic quality and in interpreting the type of accumulation, enabled the discovery of the Papa Terra and Maromba fields in deposits located under the volcanoes”, says Paulo Mendonça.

And what everyone had been waiting for – that the new ideas and technologies brought by the large international companies, who had arrived here after the industry was opened up, would achieve success – had so far not resulted in any important discovery. Petrobras itself, with new exploration ideas, had managed excellent results. In the Espírito Santo Basin, alternative geological models associated with saliniferous tectonics and even deeper deposits – Campaniano and Maestrichtiano – found oil in 21 of the 23 wells drilled – an excellent rate for an industry accustomed to an average exploration success rate of 20%. In the Santos Basin, other models used – like the shallow platform arenites – which culminated in the discovery of the Mexilhão field – led to a series of discoveries of natural gas and light oil veins (the Cedro, Tambaú and Uruguá fields).

“It would be very easy if all of Brazil was like the Campos Basin. But the merit is that even if it isn’t, we have discovered new reserves on other exploration fronts”, says the Petrobras exploration manager.

13 billion barrels added

The challenges now are different: to define the deep-water oil-bearing systems at the new frontiers on the Equatorial Margin – the Potiguar, Ceará, Barreirinhas and Pará/Maranhão Basins – and on the Eastern Margin – Jequitinhonha, Camamu/Almada and Sergipe/Alagoas – and to control the pre-salt section in the region that stretches from the Santos Basin to the Espírito Santo Basin.

Exploration in the pre-salt is already showing positive results – as is the case of the deposits found in block BM-S-11 and in the neighboring BM-S-10, in the Santos Basin. “Our geophysicists have for years been developing algorithms that improve the imaging of the pre-salt section”.

Paulo Mendonça stresses that the all the accumulated knowledge has been decisive when it comes to making a decision. “At Espírito Santo, it was this knowledge that motivated us. For the purpose of maintaining and improving this know-how, we have made massive investments in training programs with Brazilian and foreign universities”.

“Petrobras is a successful company because it uses the world’s best technology – whether in acquiring, processing, interpreting and modeling – but it has never neglected the qualification and knowledge of its technicians”, adds Celso Carlos Martins, general manager for applied exploration geophysics.

“Another great merit of Petrobras is the technology developed in-house – something few companies in the world do”, the geophysicist points out.

In the areas of E&P and at the Research Center, more than 50 geoscientists work on developing applications where the focus is on improving the seismic imaging, attributes and resolution.

This work has brought the company promising results – with the development of processing algorithms that enable us to work with techniques like pre-stacking migration – both in time (PSTM-Pre-Stack Time Migration) and at depth (PSDM – Pre-Stack Depth Migration) – and advanced filtering and inversion algorithms – like steps in the conventional processing flow chart.

The Pre-Stacking Migration at depth consists of migrating a very large volume of data before stacking them – contrary to what used to happen in conventional processing – as a means of better positioning the events registered on the acquisition, the time when a series of distortions occurs, caused by the heterogeneities in the rocky layers.

The study that defines the oil-bearing systems in the post-salt section is in a much more advanced stage than in the pre-salt section, to such an extent that the location of the next large discovery in a virgin basin is no longer a secret: it is only a question of time before Petrobras announces discoveries in Jequitinhonha. “Thereafter, it should be at Barreirinhas”, adds Paulo Mendonça.

The methodology used in the exploration approach to the basins in recent years has enabled Petrobras to add the equivalent of 13 billion barrels of oil to the exploration portfolio – indicating 20% in natural gas and 35% light oil. “Today, we have greater convictions as to where we are going to find gas, than five years ago”, the executive concludes.
